and Saving the Furniture and the Puppy Together
At four months old, my dog Gureum cost me three slippers and two charging cables (it means "cloud" in Korean). Mid-fume, mid-search, the truth arrived: she wasn't misbehaving: her gums were itching her out of her mind. The strategy changed that day, and peace arrived within two months. Here's the strategy.
Teething starts at 3-4 months and wraps around 6. While 28 baby teeth fall and 42 permanent teeth arrive, the gums itch and ache: and everything chewable becomes a target. The answer isn't scolding: it's supplying plenty of LEGAL chews and removing the illegal ones. And a baby tooth still standing past 7 months warps the permanent lineup: that's an extraction consult.
The teething timetable
Knowing the schedule explains why THIS week is the worst one, and when it ends. It flows like this:

The teething toolkit
- Rubber teethers are the foundation: elasticity that gives slightly under a fingernail is what gums want. Rock-hard items can crack incoming permanent teeth.
- Frozen things are the miracle cure: a wet towel twisted and frozen, a rubber toy from the freezer: cold quiets aching gums. One frozen carrot bought Gureum thirty minutes of silence.
- Drain the energy with nose-work toys: half of the chew drive is boredom, and a working nose retires a working jaw.
- Rotate three or four toys: hand over the full arsenal at once and it's all boring within the week.
- And teach the one rule NOW: hands and clothes are not toys. Play stops instantly on contact: nothing teaches it faster.
Defending the furniture and the cords
Removal wins: it's that simple. Cords get covers or a route behind the furniture: shoes go INSIDE the shoe cabinet: remotes and glasses move above jump height. Immovable furniture legs get dog-safe bitter spray: it holds a reasonable line. And unsupervised time happens in the pen or crate with safe toys only: nearly every incident happens when nobody's watching. One more rule: a toy chewed down to swallowable fragments gets thrown out that same day.
This gremlin era lasts two months
The photo of a puppy playing innocent beside a half-eaten slipper becomes, within months, the most-revisited post in the album. A baby tooth that won't leave: vet
Past 7 months, a baby tooth and permanent tooth standing double-parked is a retained baby tooth: small-breed canines are the classic case. Left alone: a warped lineup, food packing into the gap, early periodontal disease. Extraction often piggybacks on the spay/neuter anesthesia: raise it with the vet.
Picking at meals: soak the food
Sore gums make kibble-crunching a chore for a stretch: ten minutes in lukewarm water and most puppies dig back in. But zero appetite plus heavy drooling or serious mouth odor: different problem, book the visit.
Tooth brushing starts NOW
From around 6 months, these are the lifetime teeth. And this exact window: a puppy already used to mouth handling: is the golden entry point for brushing. Finger brush, dog toothpaste, front teeth, short sessions.
Anger at the wreckage is fair. Just hold onto this: the puppy is passing through a painful stretch, and in two months will be a model citizen who denies everything. A few slippers, traded for a lifetime of teeth: the exchange rate is bearable.
