Affection, Requests, or Anxiety?
After every workout, my dog Gureum licks my calves with the focus of a professional (it means "cloud" in Korean). For a while I read it as a hero's welcome. It was the salt. Licking never has just one meaning: sort it into five, and you can hear what's actually being said.
Dogs lick people for five reasons: affection, requests, taste and scent, soothing, and anxiety. The sorting keys are when, where, and for how long. A short lick in a wiggling welcome: affection. Licking at meal or walk o'clock: a request. A targeted campaign on sweaty skin: taste. And licking that never ends, in unfamiliar settings: that's the anxiety side.
Why do dogs lick people at all?
Licking is the first communication a dog ever learns: the mother licks the pups into cleanliness, the pups lick her mouth to request food. Into adulthood, licking stays loaded with affection, request, and self-soothing all at once. The human failure mode: filing every lick under kisses. Split it by situation: especially when it starts, when it stops, and where the EYES are during: and nine out of ten reads come clean.

Where's the line?
Short licks of greeting or request: no problem at all. Two exceptions. One: the human face, especially around the mouth: dog saliva carries bacteria transferable to humans, so with young kids or immunocompromised family, cap it at hands. Two: the licking with no OFF switch. Hand withdrawn, moves to the arm: arm withdrawn, moves to their own front paws: that chain is anxiety wearing affection's costume.
Learned this on the job: Gureum's anxiety target isn't my hand: it's my CLOTHES. In an unfamiliar house she'll lick the knee of my pants indefinitely. Once I decoded it, the licking became a signal: oh, you're uncomfortable here: and we relocate.
Dialing back the excessive licking
- When licking starts, attention stops. Pushing them off or saying no is still a response: still a payment. Withdraw the hand quietly, look elsewhere.
- Pay the pause: three lick-free seconds earning a treat stretch into ten.
- Assign the mouth other work: snuffle mats and chew toys reroute the oral budget.
- Audit the exercise: surplus energy exits through the tongue.
- Self-licking a specific spot (paws, flank): that's a skin or pain question: vet.
- Brief the guests: please pull your hand back if she licks: keeps their hands from becoming vending machines.
Trade the licking for something to brag about
The longest licking days are the boring days: nothing else happened. Dogs who meet neighborhood friends through kkeung and rack up play dates show visibly less mouth-based commentary at home. Completed-walk posts surface in the neighborhood feed: finding a friend who walks at your hour is the easy part.

The airborne face-lick homecoming
Accept the welcome: protect the face. Drop to a knee, offer a hand: the hand gets licked, everyone wins. Allow the face-licking and the jumping calcifies with it: and gets deployed on guests.
The licks when you're crying
Don't block these. They've read the shift in your scent and sound, and this is their soothing protocol: and the licking calms THEM as much as you. Receive it, and you both land softer.
The self-licking
Different problem entirely: allergies, wounds, joint pain, or stress. One spot licked for days: fur wet or thinning: vet.
Licking is one of the only hands a dog has. They use it to touch us, to ask us, to comfort us. Trim only the excess: and hear the rest as the language it is. One lick across the back of a hand carries more than it looks like it does.
