Two days after a bath, the couch smelled like dog again. My first thought was another bath: then I actually put my nose to my dog Gureum and traced it (it means "cloud" in Korean): not the torso. The ear. Since that day, a smell doesn't send me to the tub: it sends me through a five-spot inspection. Here's the route.
Dog odor almost always traces to one of five places: ears, mouth, anal glands, skin, or a coat that never fully dried: and a torso bath fixes none of them. Sour smell: check the ears. Fishy: anal glands. Rotten: the mouth. Musty: the half-dried coat.
How do you find WHERE the smell lives?
Learned this on the job: odor TYPE finds the location fastest. Put your nose to the ears, mouth, rear, belly, and paws in turn: thirty seconds, done. A smell blasting from one station is far more common than an even, all-over one.

Fixing ear smell and mouth smell
Ears are the number-one source: floppy-eared breeds especially, where the covered canal stays humid and yeast thrives. Fill with ear cleaner, massage the base for 30 seconds, let them shake, wipe what surfaces with cotton: no swabs. Every two weeks is typical: and if the smell returns within three days of a cleaning, that's an infection needing medication, not more cleaning.
Mouth smell is tartar. Red gumlines or yellowed teeth mean gum disease has already opened for business. Brushing halts the progression: hardened tartar only leaves via a dental cleaning. Gureum's own gum diagnosis started as a bad-breath complaint. We brush daily now.
Anal glands vs. skin: what's the difference?
- Anal gland smell arrives SUDDENLY: often a squirt of fluid escaping when startled or excited. Scooting across the floor alongside makes it near-certain. Don't know how to express them: ask the groomer or vet.
- Skin smell hums evenly across the whole body. Greasy odor plus reddening or darkening skin suggests seborrhea or yeast dermatitis: regular shampoo won't touch it: that's prescription-shampoo territory.
- The corn-chip smell from the feet is usually yeast between the toes. Washing paws after walks and drying them COMPLETELY resolves most cases by itself.
Smelly day: log where it came from
Odor causes live in the repeat locations. On the strong-smell days, post an ear or mouth photo to kkeung: each keeps its date, and the same-spot-every-few-weeks pattern surfaces. That becomes the evidence base for your anal-gland schedule and ear-cleaning cycle.

The half-dried coat
Musty smell the day AFTER a bath is, nine times out of ten, an undercoat that never dried. Double coats and curly long coats read dry on the surface while soaked at the core. Push a finger to the roots and check: and run the dryer twice as long as feels necessary.
Shampoo residue
Under-rinsed shampoo generates its own odor at skin level. The standard: rinse past the visible foam, until the water runs without slickness.
Too many baths
Every extra bath strips more barrier: the skin compensates with more oil: the oil makes more smell. If you escalated the bathing BECAUSE of the smell and the smell got worse: this loop is usually why.
A smell doesn't mean your dog is dirty: it means one station needs attention. Walk the five spots in order and most of it resolves at home. What doesn't resolve: that's the clinic's turn. Just don't sit on it.
