Asked how old my dog Gureum is, I'd answer about thirty, in human years (it means "cloud" in Korean): with no actual basis. The multiply-by-7 formula I grew up with never balanced. Looking properly, I found two facts: aging speed depends on SIZE, and the first two years run absurdly fast.
Multiplying dog age by 7 is inaccurate. Year one equals about human 15: year two, about 24: after that, small dogs age 4-5 human years per year and large dogs 6-7. So the same 10-year-old is roughly 56 as a small dog and 66 as a large one. Seniorhood starts around 10 for small dogs, 7 for large.
The 7x formula is old arithmetic: human 70 divided by dog 10, nothing more. In reality a dog reaches full adulthood: and reproductive maturity: inside year one, which maps that first year to roughly 15 human years. From there, size sets the pace.
| Dog's age | Small (under 20 lbs) | Medium (22-50 lbs) | Large (50+ lbs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| 2 | 24 | 24 | 24 |
| 3 | 28 | 29 | 30 |
| 5 | 36 | 38 | 42 |
| 7 | 44 | 47 | 54 |
| 10 | 56 | 60 | 72 |
| 13 | 68 | 74 | 90 |
| 15 | 76 | 83 | 105 |
* Based on the size-based conversion chart widely used in veterinary medicine. Individual variation applies: read it as a guide, not a verdict.
In most of nature, bigger lives longer: elephants outlast mice. Dogs invert it: a Great Dane's life runs far shorter than a Chihuahua's. The standard explanation: large breeds grow fast, and cellular aging runs fast with it, while the joints and heart carry a heavier structural load. Hence the management calendar: senior care starts at 7 for large dogs, 10 for small.
Learned this on the job: the gap between Gureum at three and Gureum at six was, in human terms, twenty-eight to forty. Slightly slower recovery after walks: a brief pause at the bottom of the stairs. That's what forty looks like.
A face you see daily never looks older. Post photos to kkeung steadily and each keeps its date: set the age-three photo beside today's and the whitening muzzle finally shows itself. One photo pair beats any conversion chart for making age real.
Save a photo of today →White hairs at the muzzle and brows: a slight haze in the eyes: slower bounce-back after walks. A hesitation at the stairs or the couch is the joints speaking. This is when non-slip mats and low ramps start earning their keep.
More sleep, cooler interest in play, night pacing or daytime staring. Slow response to their name can be hearing or cognition: have it checked.
Once inside the senior window: twice-yearly checkups. Bloodwork, heart auscultation, joint palpation: that modest panel catches the big diseases early. The human equivalent: annual physicals from your fifties on.
The point of converting dog years was never the exact number: it's locating where in life your dog is standing. Learning Gureum was a human forty, I found myself steering our walks onto the softer paths.
